In case you haven’t heard of the Human Library, www.humanlibrary.org it is a worldwide movement for social change which offers you, as “a reader,” the opportunity to listen to stories told by “Human Books.” - stories from people who have been marginalized, stereotyped or stigmatized for such things as their nationality, sexuality, religion, mental or physical challenges, career or lifestyle choices.
After each presentation, you can engage in dialogue with the “Book” to gain new or greater perspective and understanding. The goal of the Human Library project is to create a safe framework for conversations that can help to challenge prejudice, end discrimination, prevent conflicts and contribute to greater human cohesion across social, religious, economic and ethnic lines.
With the increasing divisiveness and racial tensions of our times, I believe this event is important, special and needed now more than ever. It will be extra special for me, because I will be one of 26 “Human Books” this year!
Four major organizations are sponsors of the Human Library this year: The Sedona International City of Peace, Rotary Clubs of Sedona, Sedona Public Library and the Arizona Community Foundation.
